According to Japan’s Best Car Magazine (via Motor1.com), the 2021 Subaru BRZ is slated to run with a 2.4L NA engine, increasing power output to 217hp from its current 205hp with the 2.0L engine. What a difference! 😃... 🤔 It has also been widely rumored that the BRZ will adopt Toyota’s TNGA platform to shave weight and equalize weight distribution, mainly because Subaru’s Global Platform cannot accommodate rear-wheel-drive, but Subaru has yet to confirm.
Additionally, Subaru is apparently prioritizing an automatic transmission option as preferential to the 6-speed, seeing as ATs are increasing in demand throughout North America. Thankfully, though, the manual transmission will still be available for all us road warriors, and these next gen models should start hitting dealers by the middle of next year.
I can understand the significance of not putting a turbo on the BRZ, since the STi is Subaru’s hallmark sports car with their unbeatable AWD and DCCD technology combo. Adding a RWD “STi” to the lineup could make or break the future of the STi sedan, too, let alone conflict with the brand’s roots in Rallycross. So, it’s good that the BRZ remain an enthusiast novelty, with its exceptional driver-focus and lightweight canyon-twisty-sculpting perfection. I feel it really is an underrated sports car, perfect for connecting with the road, and I would own one right now if I had a [minimum] three-car garage already. After all, power isn’t what defines leadership - it’s defined by the skill to handle every curve thrown at you.
If anything, it leaves ample room for all us car people to make a good project out of one. :D
